If your DiskStation fails unexpectedly, you may need to recover the data stored on its hard drives. With just an Ubuntu Live CD and a computer, you can easily recover the data stored on the DiskStation hard drives. Please refer to the following steps.
- Prepare a computer with enough hard drive slots to install the hard drives removed from the DiskStation.
- Remove the hard drives from the DiskStation, then connect them to the computer. For RAID or SHR configurations, you must connect all hard drives (except the Hot Spare drive) to the computer at the same time.
Note: Make sure the file system running on the Synology NAS hard drives is EXT4 or Btrfs.
3. Visit http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop to download the Ubuntu ISO file.
4. Burn the ISO file to a blank DVD and use it to boot the computer.
5. Install Ubuntu to a blank hard drive or a USB hard drive.
6. If the files you want to recover come from a RAID or SHR configuration, see steps 7 through 11. If the files come from a basic storage type with only one hard drive, skip to step 12.
7. Go to Applications and open Terminal.
8. Go to Applications and open Terminal, and enter: apt-get install mdadm
9. Select No configuration to complete the installation.
10. Use the following command to install lvm2.
root@ubuntu:~$ apt-get install lvm2 (otherwise vgchange will not work properly)
11. Run the following command to mount all the DiskStation hard drives.
root@ubuntu:~$ mdadm -Asf && vgchange -ay
12. You can now browse all the shared folders and files on the hard drives. You can also connect a USB hard drive to the computer, copy the files you need to the USB hard drive, and then transfer the files to other devices.
